Red Lamp Shades for Your Living Room

Contributor | -

Sometimes a living room needs a certain something to liven it up and a red lamp shade may be just the thing to add a little life and drama to your interior. Here’s how to go about choosing and using red lamp shades to give a great home design effect to the theme in your room.

Select the Right Red

You need to consider the different colors of red that are available and pick the one that will work best in your room. This might be a deep burgundy which goes well with shades of beige and cream or bright scarlet red which would add impact to a gray, white and black color scheme. Play with a paint color chart and samples of any items already chosen for your room to get this right.

Choose the Right Lamp Shade

Once you have the color right you can go about selecting the right lamp shade. If you already have a base then you will have included this in the items which need to go with your choice of red. If not, then look for a shade and base together so that you can be sure that they suit each other. When matching lamp shades and bases make sure that (for a regular table lamp) the shade is in proportion to the base, which generally means no more than one third the height of the finished lamp. Of course, you get particular styles where these proportions vary but generally, in these cases, lamps and bases are sold together so there is no need to worry about what goes with what. Do choose a shade and lamp base in the same style in any case and in a style which goes with your room.

Add Other Red Items

Don’t just add a red lamp shade to your room. Balance out the strong color by adding additional red objects here and there. This could be in the form of art work on the walls or trimmings on soft furnishings. You can add your red color anywhere but it must be added otherwise the red lamp shade will be too much of a focus for the eye when you enter the room.

Adding a lamp shade of any color adds flavor to a design theme without over-doing it. The color red is striking because it stands out and conforms to themes set in red with ease.  It’s a balanced color that is never too much or too little. Consider a red shade for your lamp as the next design decision in a room.
