UPVC Sliding Patio Doors

Contributor | -

Sliding patio doors are ideal when there is a problem of space for swinging type door panels, like for instance bi fold doors, French doors and folding sliding doors. Patio sliding doors, regardless of the materials used, all operate in the same manner. They should be chosen with proper care and attention in order to create a good complementary accent to your interior design and which brings the aesthetic beauty of your home at an entirely different level.

UPVC sliding doors provide a good performance with the advantage of minimal maintenance over the years; unlike wooden sliding patio doors which need periodic varnishing in order to maintain their shimmering beauty, UPVC sliding doors only need water and soap to keep them shiny through the passing years.

There are two basic sliding options available in the market. The first option is In Line Sliding. This comprises a single sliding door alongside a fixed panel. The UPVC patio door is encased in a frame allowing for a smooth sliding motion. The second option is the Tilt and Slide patio door. The panels are in line with each other when they are close. To open them, you need to simply tilt and pull the door panel inwards and the slide to the side to the rear of the adjacent fixed panel. This tilting action is important in giving the room the ventilation it needs without actually opening the door panels. The door panels in both options are located on non corroding stainless steel track and rollers making the sliding action smooth and effortless.

UPVC sliding patio doors are available in standard colours and finishes to suit everyone’s needs and tastes; colors such as polar white, cherrywood, rosewood, light oak, cream and mahogany are easily available for many homeowners. There are also a range of other colors that can be made on special request. There are no limits to the aesthetic appeals of UPVC patio doors.

Pink Curtains: Love Them, or Leave Them?

Contributor | -

When you think of pink curtains, what kind of images come into your mind? Do you see ruffly pink gingham curtains? Does sophisticated, dusty pink velvet come to mind? Or do you think of a floral pattern that would look at home in your granny’s cottage? The truth is, pink curtains can work well in many situations, given the chance.

One of the worst mistakes you can make with a room is decorating it to reflect taste other than your own. If you love the idea of pink curtains and you enjoy the way they filter the natural light that comes in, by all means, let yourself use pink! Using the right kind of curtains in different rooms can make a great difference in the way your home looks and feels.

Bedrooms are a great place to use different types of pink curtains. The odds are good that if you’ve got a little girl in your life, you’ve made it a point to decorate her room with feminine pink to match her princess or fairy themed bedroom. You might have a teenage girl who likes the idea of a feminine, romantic looking bedroom. Schmaltzy pink shades are probably not the best thing – look for something in a light floral. There are many wonderful options. Look at branded products such as those from Waverly curtains for inspiration and curtains, that a teen would probably love. For your own room, choose something you like, and that is soothing to you. You’ll probably like pink florals, or even pink velvet curtains. Remember – the bedroom is a relaxing, romantic place. You’ll want to make the most of it.

You may be able to get away with those pink gingham curtains in the kitchen, but it’s not likely they’ll work in the living room! Choose a neutral shade of pink for common spaces – one that doesn’t immediately set off male alarm bells. The right pink shades can tie a room together amazingly well, and they look great even in fairly masculine settings. Look for shades of pink like salmon and pair the color with colors like mid blue or tan if you want to accomplish a neutral feel.

Unless you’re shopping for girl’s furnishings, it might be hard to find exactly the right pink curtains you’re thinking of in local stores. You’re sure to get the best prices, and enjoy the wide selection available online – so don’t be afraid! The right pink can make a difference.

Bathroom Window Treatments: Blinds or Curtains?

Contributor | -

If you are renovating your bathroom or simply wanting to redecorate it, one quick way to change the overall appearance is to install new window treatments. The first question many people have when doing so, however is whether to install bathroom blinds or curtains. There are pros and cons to both.

Some people prefer a soft, feminine look in a bathroom. They tend to favor soft, lacy curtains or with perhaps matching curtains around their vanity pedestal. These can look great in a bathroom and if you buy the right type of material; something that is easy to care for, wash, and is mildew resistant – you should not have any problems with them.

Bathrooms can be very humid rooms however, and it is not at all uncommon for fabric as well as other items in a bathroom, to quickly become mildewed.

Mildew is very difficult to launder out of fabric.  Your alternatives, in a case when mildew has formed are limited. If there is little mildew you can often use different home treatments to get it out of the curtains – although these same treatments may end up being quite hard on the actual fabric.

Alternatively, you can purchase fairly cheap curtains or material and replace them as needed.  Some curtains, made from similar material as some shower curtains can look great in a bathroom window and they do not mildew as easily.

A better alternative is to purchase vinyl blinds or shutters.

Aluminum blinds also do quite well in a bathroom, though many find that vinyl is both longer lasting and easier to care for.

One plus with blinds is that they usually provide much better privacy than curtains which is an additional benefit for bathroom windows unless the windows are high up and privacy is not an issue. Another fairly inexpensive alternative is to apply frosted window film to all or part of the bathroom window. This is cheap and provides quite good privacy while allowing light to still enter through the window.

Whatever your final decision, you will find that changing your blinds or curtains is a quick way to give your bathroom a needed lift. Look for something that will resist mildew, looks appealing, and provides you with all the privacy you need.

Creative Ideas For Decorating With A Wood Valance

Contributor | -

Have you ever thought about decorating your windows with a wood valance?

Window valances are a type of window treatment, which covers the upper portion of a window. They can be hung or mounted as a stand-alone feature or pared up with curtains or window blinds. They are also used to conceal drapery hardware that may not be attractive.

If you are tired of your current window dressings, consider wood window valances, which can change room decor instantly and bring in new colors and dimensions to a room.

Shaped Wood Valance

The Shaped wood valance is appropriate for casual rooms and work just as well in formal settings. Shaped valances add a touch of class to any room and can be elaborately played up or dressed down as the case may warrant.

Scalloped Wood Valance

Scalloped wood valances add a completely new dimension to a room. Scalloped shapes bring in a sophisticated style and can be a nice touch used in conjunction with country window treatments or enhance the formal style of a dining room.

Gingerbread Valance

A gingerbread valance can be just the right touch for country cottages or add a pinch of style to Victorian homes. Use the color and texture of wood in a valance to accent or compliment other wood pieces in the room.

Arched Wood Valance

Arched wood valances look particularly nice with heavy drapes, rich with color and texture. This elegant look is an appealing architectural design used in older homes and adds a creative touch to new homes, as well.

The skies are the limit with carved wood window valances. They add sophistication and style with carved patterns of your choice.

Use any depth and height to make the wood window valance the focal point of a room. Match up a decorative, carved valance with sheers, layered panels or try introducing velvet drapes.

Shelf valances add an entirely different dimension to the room, adding a unique flair and functionality. Store and display your favorite, delicate knickknacks on a shelf valance, where they can be appreciated and kept safe.

Give wood valances for windows some thought the next time you consider redecorating.

Eyelet Curtains are Perfect for Any Room

Contributor | -

Typically having metal-lined holes to insert curtain rods into, eyelet window curtains are simple to put on, to open, and then to close. This is due to the ease and smoothness in sliding a certain curtain piece’s aforementioned holes through the rod it is hung from.

However, this is not always the case because if the size of the eyelets, permanently attached to each curtain panel, is not a perfect match to the size of the rod, there will be an impediment in the overall functionality. Ideally – the eyelets must be larger than the curtains’ rod, and not of the same size.

This type of curtain has a stunning visual appeal, since the pleats magnificently ‘drop’ in uniform, thus creating a cozy ambiance to any area.

Within the house, eyelet lace curtains are wonderful to have in the living room where guests are received and welcomed by family members as well as in the bedrooms where homeowners relax at the end of a long day. Eyelet curtains are also a welcome addition in the kitchen where delicious food and beverages are prepared – or in the den where the family spends bonding moments together.

Having eyelet curtains to the windows of these rooms will surely enhance the homey atmosphere and add to any decor.

Although heavier fabrics like velvet can absolutely be used, there can soon be wearing and then tearing especially if there is constant opening and closing of these curtains. In this case, lighter fabrics like cotton, silk, polyester, or satin may be chosen instead.

Since the choices of colors and designs of the fabrics vary a lot, whether the curtains are ready-made, custom-made, or home-made, any area will definitely be accented or highlighted by the most suitable patterns.

Depending on every homeowner, these curtains may also be changed from time to time, to adjust to the weather. For instance, the sheer kind is perfect during summer, while the thick kind is excellent during winter.

Whatever material is selected, eyelet window curtains are undoubtedly exceptional accessories for any spot.

Should You Hang Curtains or Install Plantation Shutters?

Contributor | -

Many people debate this question. If you think about it carefully, and objectively, there are many reasons why shutters are preferable to hanging drapes in windows.

Plantations shutters are great at filtering light; much better in fact than curtains could ever be mainly due to the fact that the slats on shutters can be closed or angled to a degree that will effectively filter as much light out of a room as you like.

Curtains, on the other hand, usually need to be fully opened during the day and tied back, thus washing the room in bright light. At night, curtains must be closed so that no one can see into the room. Shutters, on the other hand, can have the slats tilted upwards so that some night light can still filter in.

Consider How Dust Collects Within Fabrics

Allergies are a problem for many. While there are many different things that trigger allergy attacks, dust is a common trigger.  Curtains, especially heavy, lined curtains are somewhat of a dust trap. Shutters, on the other hand, are much easier to clean and to keep dust free.

If you, or someone in your home, suffer from allergies, you should consider installing interior plantation shutters. You will find that the dust levels in your home are much more manageable.

Shutters Rarely Go Out of Style

Another problem with drapes is that they date fairly easily. What may be in style one year may be out of style the next.  What do you do about that? Rush out and pay a lot of money on new drapes?  It can become very expensive trying to keep up with the latest in home décor if you have to keep changing your drapes every year or two.

Shutters really do not go out of style.

Admittedly, they are very popular now, but even when or if the current popularity declines shutters will still look great. They are timeless, and have been for decades.

Decorate Your Windows With Cotton Voile Curtains

Contributor | -

When looking for different types of curtains to use as window treatments you will see a few different types of materials used in creating them.

Some fabrics are used to create solid curtains, while others are made to be sheer. The cotton voile curtains are a design made to be sheer or semi-sheer. Most of these curtains will be made from a cotton polyester blend to create the sheer style. There are several styles designed by John Lewis, which come with different types of tops. There is the slot head style or the drop panel style.

The panels with a slot top section are designed with a pocket that slips onto the rod for hanging your curtain. The drop panel design has a thicker top section with holes running through it, which is where you insert your rod for placement in hanging these panels. These can be hung over a traditional window area or used on a glass door panel.

A variation on the rod style topper is the hook design. This type of voile curtain is usually designed as a semi-sheer, which gently filters the outside light. These curtains can come with decorative lace or embroidery on the panels to enhance the overall design of the piece.

When using a set of cotton voile curtains you have the option of using them in combination with other solid curtains or drapes. The sheers create a dramatic effect when used underneath a formal style of drapes.

When using them on a door to filter the light through the glass, they are generally used alone. An inset glass door window should have a rod placed at the top and bottom to secure the panel onto. To add an extra flair to your door you can gather the panel in the mid section and tie it with a decorative matching piece of fabric.

Benefits of Cordless Cellular Shades

Contributor | -

A lot of home owners have realized the importance of having a great window treatment. Cordless cellular shades combine the energy efficiency benefit of a cellular shade with elegance and safety of a cordless shade. You may be surprised how great of an addition this is to your household window treatments. It is truly the marriage of the best of both worlds.

Cellular shades – otherwise known as honeycomb shades are able to save you money by being able to help in improving the energy efficiency of your house. This is due to the layers of air packets in the shape of a honeycomb. This enables the shade to insulate against heat and cold.

The amount of insulation the cellular shade is able to provide depends on its number of layers of honeycomb cells and size of the pleats. Therefore, double cell shade will provide better insulation compared to a single cell shade. And the bigger the pleats, the better the insulation. For good insulation, the most popular model is the 3/8” double cell shade.

Cellular shades also allow you to have complete privacy and still let some light in. But if you need total light blocking, there are also cellular shades for room darkening purposes.

They allow you to raise and lower your window shades with style and ease. More and more people are choosing to get this option. It will enhance the look of your room by eliminating the visual distraction of a chord. It also allows you to enjoy a clean and unobstructed view through your windows. Cellular shades are cordless so there’s no string to raise or lower the shades, they are an ideal choice in order to provide a safer environment for homes with small children or pets.

To lower your shade, you simply pull down on the bottom rail to the desired position. And to raise the shade, gently push the bottom rail up. There is also the motorized version, but it is very expensive and hard to repair.

For elegant design, energy efficiency, and ease of use and safety -cordless shades are your best choice.

How To Make Your Own Roman Shades

Contributor | -

Roman Shades are a great classic window covering you can make yourself. With some planning and patience, they can be just as pretty as the expensive ones in the retail stores. Learning how to make roman shades is a good skill to acquire and once you get it figured out, not hard at all.

First, go shopping and look at shades. Figure out what kind you want and spend some time looking at how they are made. The number of battens determines how many folds the finished shade will have and the rings are positioned at every other batten. Battens make your shade stiff so it folds properly. Take note of how the shades are finished at the top and bottom.

Hardware kits are available online and in some of the big box stores. Buy good hardware kits. They are worth the money. Your kit should include mountings, battens, rings, and cords. Buy a header board as well, just a little smaller than the top of the finished shade.

You need access to a sewing machine, a large flat area to lay out the cloth, and basic sewing tools. A T-square and a long ruler are essential. Measure the window and make a paper pattern. Make sure the pattern fits the window exactly. Add extra for the seams and allow for the top rail and bottom treatment. Some people use Velcro to fasten the shade at the top so it can be taken down for washing. A dowel can be used at the bottom if desired.

Sewing is the easy part. It is like making a huge pillow case out of shade fabric and liner. Most people make slots so the battens/dowel can be removed when you want to wash the Roman shade. After the fabric is sewn and pressed, insert the battens and stitch rings on every other one. Place the rings one quarter of the way in on each side. Finish the bottom and attach to the header board.

Run the cords but do not cut them yet. Install your shade in the window and make sure it works properly. Put it down completely and finish the cords for length. Remember, if the cords are long when it is down, they will pool on the floor when it is up.

Following these easy steps is sure to lead to beautiful blinds you can enjoy for years to come. It’s not hard to make your own great looking Roman shades, and the money you’ll save makes the small time investment worth it.

Blinds vs. Curtains

Contributor | -

Curtains or Blinds? One of the First Decisions For HomeownersWhen you first move into a new house or apartment, covering your windows is usually one of the first things that need to be done. Without window treatments, you lose the ability to control light, temperature and privacy in your home. But, which treatment is best for you? Blinds and curtains are two very popular types of window treatments, but both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Blinds are available in many different styles and can match almost any style room, regardless of changes you make to the wall colors or décor. They also do not cover up the window quite as much as curtains and, because of the way they are designed, you have much more control over the level of light being let in through the window. You can also allow light in your home without sacrificing your privacy. However blinds do have a few disadvantages as well. Horizontal blinds can be difficult to clean and do not keep out all light during the day. They can also be very expensive depending on the style you choose.

Curtains are also available in a number of various styles, fabrics and lengths so it is very easy to match them to any room. They are much more efficient at keeping light out of a room and can also give the room an airy, cozier feeling. The main down side to curtains is that if you change the décor of the room they are hung in, it can be difficult to match them and you may just need to get new ones. And, like blinds, they can also be quite expensive depending on the fabric or material you choose.

In addition to this, there are some other factors to keep in mind as well. If you change the color of your room often, blinds may be the better way to go as they’re more likely to match every change you make. If you tend to leave the colors the same, then curtains will work just fine. Also keep in mind that you can always get the best of both worlds by installing blinds and then adding thin, airy curtains as an accent. You’ll get the light control and flexibility of blinds while at the same time adding an elegant touch to the room with the curtains.

In the end, it all comes down to what you think has the most functional advantage for you while at the same time fitting your room’s décor. With this information, you’ll hopefully be able to make a better informed decision when it comes to time to select coverings for your windows.

5 Great Reasons to Upgrade Your Kitchen Blinds

Contributor | -

Venetian Kitchen Window Blinds Give More Light In a KitchenTired of seeing those filthy, hard to manage, mini blinds hanging in your kitchen? Infuse new life into your kitchen with blinds made especially for the most used area of your home. Kitchen blinds offer maximum looks for less, or about the same cost as other window treatments.

Here are five great reasons to go ahead and make your home life a little better. (and easier.)

Toss those dirty old mini blinds where they belong. You know where. No, not in your closet for later use. New kitchen blinds will boost your kitchen up a couple notches on the awesome scale. Now that makes you feel good, right?

# 1. If you’ve been through the window blind cleaning thing enough times, and we’ve all been there enough times, blinds made for kitchens – stay cleaner longer. This means you’ll clean them less often than ordinary blinds. In turn, you can go to the park and enjoy your day, instead of at home creating resourceful ways to clean your blinds.

#2. Window blinds made for kitchen use are easier to clean. Much easier. If you’ve cleaned standard blinds, imagine how good it feels to grab a damp cloth, wipe a few times, and it’s over. Whew. Now that’s cleaning smart, not hard.

Composite blinds are always a great idea for your kitchen window treatments.  They’re larger, and made of materials wider and firmer – such as faux wood, rather than aluminum or fabric. Tell that to your dry cleaner! (Yes, you would actually have to make a trip to the dry cleaner with Roman blinds in your kitchen.) Yuck.

#3. These blinds are very attractive from a design point, and they often cost less than drapes or curtains. That’s two great reasons, so another one snuck in here. You have some good choices available; faux, real wood, ventian – look into faux wood, first. Faux looks like real wood, but doesn’t warp like real wood.  It doesn’t cost much more than other kinds of blinds for your kitchen, and there’s a good chance you’ll like what it has to offer.

#4. Kitchens need natural sunlight. Lots of it. We also need privacy in our homes. Sometimes lots of that too! These blinds are designed to let sunlight into your kitchen, and close tight to give you privacy when you need it. They have slats that easily open wide to let the sun in, and some of these blinds can be lifted all the way to the top of the window. When closed, they’ll give you peace in privacy. That’s a luxury mini blinds can’t afford.

These are five great reasons to go and upgrade your kitchen with blinds made for your kitchen. Mini blinds, drapes, and fabrics weren’t made to go there. We just didn’t have these before.
